A27 Funding Press Release in full

by Harbour Villages on 27 December, 2018

Liberal Democrat Councillors say A27 improvements essential for District.

Liberal Democrat Councillors on Chichester District call on West Sussex County Council, Chichester District Council and Gillian Keegan to unite to ensure A27 improvements are delivered

The community worked closely together under the BABA27 (Build a Better A27) consultation process. Chichester cannot afford to continue with a road that is causing huge disruption and affect tourism and business in the community.
Our MP and leaders of West Sussex County Council and Chichester District Council must work together to pressurise the government for an urgent and effective solution. The A27 through Chichester is part of the major South Coast route and is essential for our transport infrastructure. Standing traffic causes significant environmental & air quality issues and traffic disruption.
Adrian Moss, Leader of the Liberal Democrats Group confirmed that he has written to Gillian Keegan MP, the Leaders of West Sussex County Council and Chichester District Council.
Adrian Moss said “Gillian has failed to back the District and County Councils in their joint commitment to a preferred Northern route. By sitting on the fence she must now take responsibility for the decision to withdraw all funding for an upgrade to the A27”
Adrian Moss added “With considerable commercial and housing development planned in the Chichester area over the coming years the A27 must be improved. We must also consider how it fits into the bigger picture of transport in the District more generally.”
The Liberal Democrats are also calling for a “Standing Conference” to be formed to replace BABA27 and to create a single voice for the A27 improvements and related environmental and transport improvements in the District.
The Standing Conference would build upon the outstanding work of BABA27 and be made up of concerned residents, Residents Associations, Parish Councils, campaigning groups and local Councillors to ensure the District has a single strong voice.
The aim of the Standing Conference will be to ensure that the Highways Authority, planners, Highways England and the government have a clear understanding of the views of the local residents.
The Conference will have a wide brief covering A27, local roads and mitigation required to support new commercial and housing development.
The Liberal Democrats are clear that A27 improvements are critical to the future of our District.

If the A27 is not improved within the next 5 years the area will be gridlocked. With the hundreds of new houses being built in the area and the ever growing number of cars it is folly to leave this vital work to the last minute. Councillors have a duty to the community to sort out the problem without delay. Why there was never the proposed flyover, over the Fishbourne roundabout is quite ridiculous and would have made the now vital improvements a much easier task.
